Success Stories – Chaitanya Sravanthi

My name is Salapu Umamaheswari. I am 51 yrs old and came from a poor family. Unlike many parents who think it is unnecessary to send girls to school, I had a dream that my daughter should get gold medal in her studies.

We lived in a slum area called Velampeta, in Visakhapatnam. My husband is a drunkard and died of jaundice in 1998. As a house wife, I really got messed up with the circumstances and my daughter Kusumalatha was studying 5th class at that time. We sustained for a period of time with my husband’s PF and slowly I realized that I need to do something before we drown into worst conditions and my dream did not let me to sleep properly. One day a small group of women from this slum approached my home and they spoke about Self Help Groups and Chaitanya Sravanthi Organisation. It sounds good but I need minimum earning to save a little..some women in that group understood my situation and suggested me to meet Mrs. Rahman the President of CHS. As I went to the CHS office, there I expected a lady with lot of pride on her face, wearing a pattu saree and sitting in a air conditioned office with glass doors. But to my wonder I saw a lady with pleasant smile on her face, wearing a cotton saree and doing her works on her own…with no glass doors. As I spoke to her, she suggested me to work in a current bill office and also provided job training with the help of other channels. Above all she personally funded (gave scholarship) to my daughters education from 6th class onwards. Soon after, I joined as member in SHG at velampeta.

The day I met Mrs.Rahman changed our lives forever. With the help of scholarship, my daughter made my dream come true as she got gold medal in MBA(HR).. Till today I am continuing my job as a bill collector in current office and volunteering in looking after Chaitanya Sravanthi’s accounts.

If it was not Chaitanya Sravanthi’s support, my dream would remain dream and we still suffer with hunger and poverty.
