A potentially effective way to empower women is through access to credit. Giving a woman access to credit increases her opportunities to reach a higher level of empowerment through the possibility to obtain her own source of income and create a sense of security”.

Ms. Satyavathi, 35 year old woman is living in a slum of Visakhapatnam city with her husband, two children and in laws. She has been working in a tailoring shop for five years and has monthly earnings of Rs.600 to 1000/- Her husband has no work and a drunkard. Satyavathi took loans from here and there to manage her home. Need to repay the loans, worsened her economical situation. Hence she started looking for a better work. But in vain she found nothing she could do.

 

She got to know about CHS and attended to a skill training program conducted by CHS. Then after, she became an active member of CHS and MACTS program. CHS has released an amount of loan to b buy tailoring machine and supported in getting bank loan to buy an auto rickshaw to her husband. Now the total monthly income is Rs. 21000 from auto and tailoring. Now her husband stopped drinking alcohol land working for his family.

Satyavathi expressed that the skill training program has made her more confidence and MACTS support made her to live a respectful life in the society. Now she is able to manage her family well while repaying the loan regularly. She also joined both her children in a reputed English medium school.

EMPOWERING WOMAN THROUGH SHG’S AND SKILL TRAINING PROGRAMS

Rajana Pavani is a 36 years old woman living in the slums of vsp. She was the eldest daughter of her family. She was forced to drop out of school due to ill economical status of the family and got married at the age of 17.

Pavani’s husband is working on van as a driver in daily basis. To supplement his meagre earnings Pavani started searching for external income source. She ensured her two children pursued education in spite of family’s financial woes.

In 2005 she joined a self help group in CHS. This gave her an opportunity to go under capacity building and skill training programs. These workshops gave her the confidence and working skills. With the help of CHS she joined in a three star hotel as a xxxxxxx. Today she is earning Rs. 7500 per month.

As a member of the SHG, CHS has provided her loan from MACTS to buy a tempo van for her husband. Now they are earning Rs.25000 per month through tempo van. With their increased income, they rejoined their children in a private school and college.

She feels that she has not only gained confidence on her but also earned respect from the society.

  • CHS has about 350 SHGs with almost 5500members and an internal savings of about Rs.80 lakhs.
  • CHS has facilitated 80 skill training programs benefiting 2250 women to start small business units.
